Day 10 - Dachau
DachauTuesday, June 14, 2011
We started the day as our usual in Munich, a traditional German breakfast. The hotel had a spread of different cheeses, meats, and breads mainly. With a bunch of other random sides, Very delicious!
In our final day of Germany, we visited Dachau. We will let the pictures speak for themselves.
This is the main entrance gate. The words translate to "freedom through work."
The main yard where roll call took place. Above is a description of the building that the prisoners stared at from the yard and a translation of what was written on the building roofs.
All but two barracks remain. These are the foundations for the barracks which were torn down and serve as unofficial grave sites.
A memorial written in every language spoken by the prisoners. "May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933-1945 because they resisted Nazism help to unite the living for the defence of peace and freedom and in respect of their fellow men."
Examples of Hitlers propaganda campaign
A memorial sculpted by a prisoner representing those who died by intentionally running into the electric fence.
Never Again
It was a difficult day, but a life changing experience. No one on our tour had much to say until an hour later when we returned to the city.
Our last order of business in Munich was to eat schnitzel and have a much needed weissbeir in a biergarten in the market.
Then we bid adieu to wonderful Germany in a 6 person sleeper car with two visually impaired German students and two foreign exchange students from Michigan. It was quite the experience.
