Day 16- Walk About Paris

Paris

Monday June 20, 2011
We started off the day in true French fashion with coffee and crepes. Delicious! Our mode of transport in Paris is the Batobus (boat) via Seine River. We took the Batobus to Notre Dame Cathedral, where we spent the day on various walking tours learning about the history of Paris. Fascinating!
View of Notre Dame from the boat, probably the best view you can get of it.

The front of Notre Dame

Ok, here is a little interesting tid bit we learned on the tour. The guide had us pretend we were 13th century peasants that couldn't read or speak Latin. Because we couldn't do either, we couldn't understand how to go to heaven or hell per the church. This engraving was here for that purpose. The middle row shows a person's good and bad things he has done in his life being weighed on a scale. If your good outweighs the bad, you get ushered to the left. If its the other way around, you get ushered in chains by demons to the right. Guess they didn't need any words to get this fear across.

This isn't a very good picture, but the building in it is the oldest hospital in the world. The hospital is located in the same square as the cathedral. It was built in the 700's and still is a working hospital. Back in the day, it was ran by nuns and priests. So, people didn't so much go here to get better, more to die in the presence of clergy. I thought all of my medical friends might find this interesting.

Just down the road from Notre Dame, this is the university of Paris. The area is called the left bank. Paris is split by the Seine River. If you are a Parisian, you are either a left banker or a right banker. Our guide who considers herself a left banker, told us how to tell the difference. A right banker will ask you how much money you have in your bank account. A left banker will ask you what book you read last.

We spent the evening at and around the Eiffel Tower.

Just to prove we were actually there.

If you weren't aware it sparkles on the hour and it is quite the sight.

We finished our first full day in Paris by doing a 4 mile midnight hike from the Eiffel Tower to our hotel. We could hear Marlene saying to us the whole time, "when you guys come up with one of your plans, you should call me first!" yes, we agree of all the things we did on this European excursion this probably wasn't our smartest. Paris is both lovely and frightening at night. But, lay off us we were able to see the Eiffel tower sparkle, not once but twice. We would like to say we have a picture for you of us on our midnight hike but we were literally too scared to stop to take a picture. Good news, we made it back to the hotel safely.

Day 17- Eat Around Paris

Paris

Tuesday June 21, 2011
We started our day super early (1:30pm). Naturally, we headed straight for food. We went to a restaurant that was French speaking only. The only two word we recognized were Bordeaux and formagge. We said sold and sold. In other words, we pointed and said si vous pleis.

Next, we made our way to Sacre Couer (Spelling? Means sacred heart). We enjoyed a beautiful bird's eye view of the city of Paris, as well as a free concert.

This is a common scene on our vacation. Trading cameras. The picture above is taken by this anonymous friend. Merci!

Our free concert

Next, we went shopping for a bit.

We saw the Eiffel tower during the day

As per our friend Jamie Tracey's suggestion, we indulged in beef bougninon(spelling?). It was delicious! Did we mention it was in front of Notre Dame Cathedral?

Paris celebrated e first day of summer with music in the streets. This group was one of our favorites.

Goodbye Paris. We had tons of fun but we are excited to be home sweet home. One more important goodbye. To our shoes, you carried us miles and miles. However, you look terrible and you smell worse. Your trip ends here.

Phoenix bound tomorrow. Thank you'll for enjoying our trip with us. We loved all the comments.

Day 15 - Sweet, Sweet Paris

Paris

Sunday, June 19, 2011
The infamous train from Florence to Paris was as eventful as we thought. Just as promised we heard screams at every stop, a thief in the night, and interesting fellow couchette riders to chat with on our journey. When we landed we struck a deal with 2 Frenchmen. If we helped them with their "recycled" bike, they would point us in the right direction to our hotel.

The "recycled" bike is in the box, so Kelly had to wheel his trolley (aka suitcase). The reason we call it recycled is cause he wouldn't let us call it stolen. Apparently, we are the gypsies in Paris.

It was an eventful start to our Paris holiday. We started Paris like we do in every city with a nice, long nap. Followed by a delicious 3 course dinner and a glass of Bordeaux. Then, we walked a long the Seine river in search of our Botabus, our mode of transport for the next two days.
Yes, that is the Eiffel tower way in the distance.

Lastly, we wandered around the courtyard of the Musee du Louvre.

Day 14 - Italian Chefs For A Day

Florence

Saturday, June 18, 2011
After waking up from our glorious nights sleep at the new palace, we repacked all of our freshly sink washed laundry.

We headed off to cooking class in Italy! The gypsy found us, yet again, on our way, but they didn't let her in the class. Kelly was thankful.

Our instructor took us to the market where we learned all about the ingredients that we would be working with.
Hey Laurel, look it's my "freaked out face."

We learned about and tasted several types of balsamic vinegar and olive oil

This guy not only posed for a picture but he gave us a sample of delicious pesto.

We learned how to make bruschetta

Homemade pasta with meat sauce

And Tiramisu

We drank wine And BTW Susan Sarandon's doppleganger was in our class.

It was an emotional day:
Scared... Giovanni was telling Kelly she was doing an awful job, just awful. Then he said, "but it's ok, you will be the one eating it."

Longing... Can I give it a try?

Intensity... Don't mess up, don't mess up, don't mess up!

Desperation... I will do anything for positive feedback

Acceptance... Giovanni's only response, "she is so sweet." Note: he was utterly unimpressed with our cooking skills. Plus, we were American.

So scared...

The end result was a delicious lunch. Learning how to cook Italian food is our present to all of our friends and family. You're welcome!

The people we missed the most in class were Jeri, Kris, Nancy and Uncle Forrest. We thought of you often and we will cook for you soon. To Mike Owen, thanks for all your assistance with Italian phrases. We couldn't have gotten thru without you.
Goodbye Italy, we have loved you so.

Wish us luck we are about to embark on the infamous night train from Florence to Paris. If the gypsies don't get us, we will be blogging tomorrow from Paris.

Day 13 - The Day Of Stairs/ The Princesses Move Palaces

Florence

Friday, June 17, 2011
We have yet to mention our subpar living arrangements since landing in Florence. Hostel amenities: mold, bed bugs, dirty sheets, and drunk teenagers.
This picture just really doesn't capture it to the fullest though.

Yes, folks, this is a close up of that comforter you were wondering about. That dingy color you see, no it's not just the photo. I believe that is because it hasn't been washed. We are highly certain those sheets probably weren't either.

We will spare you what the bathroom looked like, but it was no bueno.
Here are the stairs leading into the hostel, I show you these just to show the juxtaposition between them and the hotels you will see in a few shots.

New hotel: not the hostel.

Plus a bidet!

The new hotel stairwell, you can tell how excited Kelly is about this one.

Switching hostel to hotel was not the biggest event of the day. We visited the Cathedral Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore, the city's trademark and the fourth-largest church in the Christian world. We hiked 463 stairs to the top of the cupola(dome 107 meters high), where we had a bird's eye view of Florence.

Pretty, Pretty Florence

These stairs were no ordinary stairs, they were skinny and steep.

After eating the most delicious pizza we have ever had (guilt free thanks to our hike), we went to the Galleria dellÂ'Accademia (home of Michelangelo's David). While standing next to a "Photography Forbidden" sign, I snapped a shot of this world famous 4.1m tall, anatomically correct "David." In my defense, I didn't see the sign until after and sincerely thought about deleting it. But come on, I have a photo of the David!

We finished our day with a traditional 3 course Italian dinner. And now, we may never need to eat again.

Oh and Jasmine... are you in Italy?

And hey Rachel, since you love to find weirdos in a crowd and snap a creepy shot, this one is for you. This lady has been following us around for 2 days screaming at Kelly in Italian. Now every time Kelly sees her, she runs. Needless to say, I(Malia) am the one taking the photo. But yes I too was a little afraid of her, as you can tell by only getting half of her pleading face. This picture may look crass, but I swear this woman was everywhere we were, yelling something at us, for 2 days. Even Kelly's dreams!

Hope she isn't in the cooking class with us tomorrow!
