Day 8 - Munich: Never Forget
MunichSunday, June 12, 2011
We traveled to Germany hovering over a nice Canadian family of four in a 6 person couchette.
When planning this trip, we took a gamble on Munich knowing we wanted to see Germany, but not knowing which city in particular. It was worth the gamble, Munich has breathtaking views and a haunting history. It is both home to the start of Hitler's regime and to a major movement against it. But what is most striking about Munich is it's many monuments to peace and constant questioning of government/society's actions.
Thanks Conor and Marlene for the birthday money that paid for "Mike's Bike Tour!"
Here are some of the things we saw:
Friedrnsengel (stood for 25 years of peace at one time, a long time ago)
This arch(we forgot the name, it's German people give us a break) but it stood for peace in Bavaria
This government building (name?) which used to be a war museum. The glass is a symbol of the transparency of government's work
Most importantly we drank beer and ate sausage at the Chinesischer Turm Biergarten, one of the homes of Oktoberfest.
Theatinerkirche (which we will call the white church because of how brilliantly white it is inside)
Munich's Surfers- a manmade surfer's wave built by an engineer from San Diego while he was interning at the BMW plant
And the finest character that Munich had to offer today! Nobody seemed to care and yes that is a beer on either side of him.
